The Castle Inn and the hamlet of Chiddingstone are both now owned by The National Trust to protect what is one of the prettiest villages in Kent. Chiddingstone and its row of 16th and 17th century houses are instantly recognisable from being the setting for films such as 'Room with a View' as well as 'The Wicked Lady', 'Elizabeth R' starring Glenda Jackson and 'Life of Hogarth'. Although the houses are not open to the public, of course the Castle Inn is and has been for centuries. It has a heavily beamed Saloon Bar and a small, very individual, Restaurant with waiter service. Here Luncheon is served from 12 noon with last orders at 2pm, and Dinner from 7pm with last orders at 9.30pm. Sunday Lunch is an institution at the Castle Inn. Naturally a village inn has Real Ales, the most popular being Larkins, which is brewed by Bob Dockerty in the village. There is also a carefully selected Wine List containing about 150 wines.
The Castle Inn is very deserving of its place in The Good Pub Guide and in the AA Pub Guide. Behind the Inn is a pretty vine-hung courtyard with its own Garden Bar so you don't need to carry your drinks through the building. Beyond that, and over a bridge, is a lawn with beautifully tended flowerbeds. On sunny days refreshments may be enjoyed anywhere outside and there is a comprehensive Bar & Garden Menu.
This is one of a series of walks contributed by The Castle Inn. Links to their other walks can be found below. If you enjoy visiting the The National Trust village of Chiddingstone, please consider supporting them by joining them and taking the benefit of the current The National Trust Special Offer which gives you 3 months free membership plus a free pair of binoculars!
