Tucked away on the banks of the River Ouse at the end of an un-made up lane, the Anchor Inn is a unique find. Here you can not only sit outside and enjoy its waterside location from the large gardens, you can also extend your pub walk by hiring one of their rowing boats - maybe after your refreshment has replenished your energy levels! This is a perfect end to his enjoyable circular riverside pub walk.

It is white painted brick with leaded light windows, a clay tile roof and an entrance porch supported on two solid oak pillars that are uniquely curved in a somewhat bizarre but appealing way. When we called in April 2009, the roof was being renewed but it was still open and business as usual - the pub was covered in scaffolding so just rather less photogenic than usual!

Good selection of home-cooked food for under £10 although I went slightly over this budget with the delicious pan-fried lamb cutlets (3) topped with rosemary and onion jus served with Dauphinois potatoes and seasonal vegetables. Delicous and accompanied by Harvey's Sussex best bitter.

OS MAPS really enhance enjoyment of pub walks and taking one with you is highly recommended. The 1:50,000 Brighton & Lewes Landranger map is suitable but we prefer the 1:25,000 Brighton & Hove Explorer Map as regular walkers. The laminated Active Explorer Map is more durable and waterproof but does of course cost more.
