Publican Wins Best Banger Award

3 November 2008 - A publican has shown that the pub really is the true home of the great British banger. Keith Berkins runs the Fence Gate Inn near Burnley in Lancashire and won the Best Pub Sausage category as well as the Overall Best Sausage category.

According to The Publican trade magazine, his cheese and sun blush tomato with a hint of basil sausage was the only entry to be awarded 100% by the judges.

As well as being a publican, Kevin is a master butcher by training who creates speciality sausages for his pub which he now plans to sell in a shop at his second pub which is opening shortly.

The winners in the Best Pub Sausage category were:

First: Kevin Berkins, Fence Gate Inn, Fence, Burnley, Lancs - Cheese & Sun Blush Tomato with a Hint of Basil

Second: Philip Lomax, Roberts of Port Dinorwic, Caernarfon, Wales - Pork Whirl

Third: Mark Etherington, Brian Etherington Meat Co, Redruth, Cornwal - Cornish Pork with Tribute Beer and Thyme

The British Pork Executive (BPEX for short) says that sausages are the most popular meat choice when eating out. For those that love a traditional pub meal, few things beat a good sausages and mash and there is even a Sausage Appreciation Society to prove it!
