Book Review
Waterside Pubs (Mike Lucas)
"Deserving of a unique place on the pub walker's bookshelf"
The Double Locks Hotel is not easy to find but it has long been a special favourite of mine. You need to determinedly drive through an unappealing industrial estate then turn down an inconspicuous lane that gives no clue to your final destination and then finally over a canal bridge almost too narrow to take a family car. However once there, few would deny that the Double Locks has been worth persevering for and we have returned a number of times since first discovering it almost 20 years ago.
I was therefore delighted to see this is just one of the many unique treasures to be found in Mike Lucas’s “Waterside Pubs”. Recently published by Waterways World, the inland waterways magazine, this book comprises a collection of 150 canal and riverside pubs of England and Wales.
When I say the Double Locks is hard to find, I mean it is hard by road. In truth, it is perfectly located for visiting by boat or via an easy walk or cycle ride from Exeter Canal Basin just one and a half miles away. And this is what makes Waterside Pubs such a special book – it encourages you to visit these tucked away places by more traditional means and so leads you to pubs you would be unlikely to discover by car.
The Author Mike Lucas is probably one of the few people suitably qualified to produce a guide like this, having spent 30 years travelling Britain’s canals and rivers. In 1972 he founded the Mikron Theatre Company to take original theatre around the country by narrowboat, performing in pubs, community halls, on village greens and at boat festivals and rallies.
Mike's love for the waterways can be felt on every page and he writes with a passion that captures perfectly the idyllic and relaxing atmosphere of our inland waterways. Combine this with some of the most appealing pubs imaginable and you have a book that deserves a unique place on the pub walker’s bookshelf.
The format of the book is high quality paperback with colour photos and maps throughout. For what is essentially a pub guide, Waterside Pubs is unique in the way that it is organised around our network of inland waterways with each of its 26 sections dedicated to a different navigable canal or river. A map shows the route of each one which is followed by some background on the waterway itself and then detailed descriptions of typically the author’s two favourite pubs that can be found along the way. Each section then finishes with a short summary on another three to five pubs that he also recommends.
